What are immigration exams?

Immigration exams are physical examinations that are done to make sure immigrants meet the health-related standards for admission into the U.S. The exams are necessary to protect the health of the U.S. population.

Immigration exams check whether immigrants have certain contagious diseases, disorders, or addictions, and the exams also make sure that the immigrants have certain vaccinations. You might need an immigration exam if you’re an immigrant to the U.S., and your family members might also need the exam if they’re also immigrants.

What should I take to my immigration medical exam?

There are several things you should take to your exam. These things can include:

  • A valid passport or other government-issued photo ID
  • Your vaccination records
  • The required number of U.S. passport photos (if applying abroad)
  • Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record (if adjusting status)
  • Your list of medications
  • And possibly some other items

You can ask us if you may need additional items for your exam with us.

What does the immigration medical exam consist of?

The exam quite simple and consists of several main parts. One, is checking your vaccinations to make sure you have the required shots, such as polio, hepatitis B, and influenza etc. You can ask us which vaccinations you need. If you’ve already received the required vaccinations, you will need to bring us your vaccination records, or if you haven’t received the required vaccinations, you can receive them at our clinic.

Another part of the immigration medical exam is checking your medical history. We’ll also do this at RubyMed Clinic. We may ask you about things like whether you’ve ever had to stay at a hospital or whether you use drugs habitually. We’ll likely ask you other, related questions too.

The exam also consists of a physical evaluation. This includes checking your eyes, ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, abdomen, skin, extremities, etc. The medical professional may also order certain tests like a chest X-ray or blood test.

Finally, there’s the mental evaluation. In this evaluation, the professional may check things like your comprehension, judgment, and behavior in order to make sure you’re mentally healthy.

What happens after an immigration medical exam?

After your exam, the professional will provide you with any information you’ll need, and the professional may be able to provide you with instructions on how to proceed.

You’re welcome to contact us at RubyMed Clinic if you’d like to learn more about how to prepare for your exam with us, what your exam will consist of, and what you can expect after your exam.
