What is a DOT physical?

A DOT physical is a physical exam that’s necessary for commercial vehicle drivers so they can obtain a commercial driver’s license. The exam makes sure a driver is able to meet the physical requirements of the driver’s job. For example, the exam might test a driver’s ability to tolerate sitting for a long period of time. Other things will be tested too, like the driver’s eyesight. Typically, the physical is really easy and straightforward for the patient!

What tests will be performed during a DOT physical?

First of all, to prepare for the tests the provider will perform, the patient should bring their glasses, contact lenses, or hearing aid, if applicable. This will ensure the tests give accurate results.

During the physical, the provider will likely check the patient’s medical history for any issues with their respiration, heart, lungs, liver, or kidneys, and the provider will likely also check for issues like high blood pressure or diabetes. To check for those health issues, the provider may perform certain tests. The provider will likely also perform a hearing test, an eye exam, a drug and alcohol screening, a urinalysis, and a blood pressure test.

After the exam, the provider will give the patient a copy of the exam results to take to the patient’s employer. If the patient’s medical history and tests were fine, then the patient can just take the exam results to their employer. If there was an issue with the patient’s medical history or tests, the provider may be able to help the patient and the patient’s employer understand and address the issue.

How long is a DOT physical good for?

After a patient passes a DOT physical exam, the patient will receive a medical certificate that allows them to drive a commercial vehicle for up to two years. However, if it’s necessary to monitor a health condition the patient has, the patient may get a certificate for under two years. After a certificate expires, the patient will need another DOT physical.

Is a DOT physical covered by insurance?

Some insurance companies may cover the cost of a DOT physical, and some employers may reimburse employees for the cost of the physical. You can check with your insurance company or your employer, or you can contact us here at RubyMed Clinic. We may be able to provide the information you need.
